ABOUT US
The Wisconsin Hardy Plant Society is a membership of garden enthusiasts who learn, teach and work to grow healthy, long-lasting gardens. We were founded in 1989 by a group of individuals who wanted to promote the love and appreciation of hardy herbaceous plants to every level of gardener. Today, we have over 800 members.

The Wisconsin Hardy Plant Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose mission is to promote interest and participation in hardy plant cultivation by providing education about herbaceous and woody plants by various means and by promoting the exchange of desirable plant material within the structure of the organization.
Programs
We meet regularly at Olbrich Botanical Gardens where nationally-recognized speakers discuss topics such as container gardening, perennials for shade, attracting pollinators, bulbs for fall planting, effective ground covers, and the latest hardy shrubs. Learn more about our programs. |
Newsletters
The newsletter, published five times a year, is packed with information about upcoming WHPS meetings, educational articles written by members and horticultural experts, and a comprehensive calendar of plant sales, tours, and other local events. View past newsletters. |
Trips
Going on a WHPS trip is a wonderful way for members to view gardens of distinction and get ideas for future projects. Past destinations include England, Scotland, Dubuque, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Minneapolis and Portland. We have also taken day trips and multi-day bus tours to other areas of Wisconsin and Illinois. Learn more about our trips. |
Local Garden Tours
In conjunction with the Dane County Master Gardeners, we offer at least two evening area garden tours each year, usually in the summer. Members can tour several interesting private gardens in a specific geographic area and often have the opportunity to meet the host gardener and ask questions. Learn more about local garden tours. |
Plant Sale - *** Temporarily Suspended***
Each May, members contribute plants from their own gardens to the plant sale in order to offer reasonably-priced plants and gardening information to the public. Proceeds are donated to worthy garden causes. Learn more about our plant sale. |
Plant Exchange - *** Temporarily Suspended***
The annual fall plant exchange is an opportunity for members to share with each other plants they have too many of or bought and can't use. Learn more about our plant exchange. |
